Kevin McKnelly VP of Red Dragonfly Web DesignThe Importance of Meta Tags

By Kevin McKnelly

The meta tags for you website help the search engines find, and index your website. They tell your audience what your website is all about.  If you want your site to be found by your potential customers, this is very important.

The tags must be filled out correctly using the optimal keywords that describe each page of your website.  If they are not, you may end up with considerably less web traffic to your site. The three most important tags are the Title Tag or Page Title, Keyword Tag or Keyword Page, and the Description Tag ( Page Description ).

The Title Tag (Page Title) is just what it says:  A title.  The title of your website which may include your company name (although not necessarily recommended), or a  few words that describe your business like: "Pest Control Services".  For some ideas of words you should use, do a Google search on your type of business, and look at each of the websites listed on page one of that search result.  Note the words used to describe each website result.

Many business owners just don’t have the time or desire to fill out the meta tags. For these busy business owners, we offer this service.  All of our SEO Packages include a meta tag analysis (and a lot more) to achieve high visibility for your website. This article describes what we actually do in our meta tag analysis.

After completing a keyword analysis, and have a list of optimal keywords, we whittle the list down further to come up with the perfect word combinations for your meta tags and for your on-page content.  The words must match each other in some respects.  If you are a swimming pool builder, “pool plastering” might be good keywords.  It is important that if you put “pool plastering” in a page’s meta tag, that you discuss pool plastering on that page (using the words “pool plastering” at least twice in the content).  You might discuss it a little bit on your “home” page, but you may go into more detail on your “services” page. These are two pages you want to make sure “pool plastering” appears in their meta tags.

Our analysis includes looking at each page’s content, and matching it with the tags. That is why in addition to our meta tag analysis, we also do a page content analysis. These are the words and paragraphs that appear on your website pages. The tags and page content go hand-in-hand. What you put in your key words must match your content of that page.  We craft the tags very carefully, spending a lot of time on each word to make sure they are the best.  We offer suggestions to modify your content to match the keywords.

For more on meta tags, check out my article, “Filling Out Meta Tags”  which goes into much more detail.

Hope this helps!
