The importance of proper Keywording

By Kevin McKnelly

When a person goes on Google, Yahoo!, or other search engines to find what they are looking for, they type in keywords.  Let’s say for example, a customer needs someone to inspect their house for termites.  They might log onto Google and type “pest control”, “termite inspections”, or something like that.  When they hit the search button, a list will pop up of websites that contain those keywords.  If you are not on the first page or so of that list, that customer will not see your website.  This is why it is so important to place those keywords and related phrases both in your on-page content, and in your meta tags.

Your on-page content consists of the words and paragraphs that relate to each page of your website.  For instance, if you have a page that describes your pest control services, your content would be words and paragraphs describing the services you do.  Keywords might be “Pest Control Services”, “Termite Inspections”, or “Bee Removal”.   These key words should match the words you put in your meta tags for that page.  For more on meta tags, read my article.

Since each page of your website focuses on something different, your key words and meta tags for those pages need to reflect that.  For some, this is a daunting task. This is where we come in.

Our SEO Process

All of our SEO packages include what is called a keyword analysis. This is to determine all of those words and phrases that your potential customers will use to find your business.  It is more difficult than you may think.  There will be many words and phrases you may not have thought of that they will use to find you in their search.  You also need to know their order of popularity.  This is what a good analysis will give you.

Here is what you get with our keyword analysis:

We start with words you think your customers will use to look for your product or service.

We come up with a list of our own.

We check on what your competitors are using for key words and phrases.

We take 1-3 and create a master list.

We then run that list through internet tools that will give us a few more suggestions.  The tools will also provide us a list that ranks all relevant words and phrases by popularity in the past few months.

After consulting with you, we then incorporate those keywords in both your on-page content, and your mega tags so that it all works together in unison.

By properly keywording your website, you have a better chance at landing on a potential customer’s search result for your products or services.  This is the first step in optimizing your site.  Red Dragonfly offers SEO packages to get your website found on the search engines.   Please feel free to contact us for more information.

Hope this helps!
